hom|o|nym
hom|o|nym «HOM uh nihm, HOH muh-», noun.
1. a word having the same pronunciation and spelling as another word, but different in meaning and origin. Mail, meaning “letters,” and mail, meaning “armor,” are homonyms.
2. = homograph. (Cf.homograph)
3. = homophone. (Cf.homophone)
4. Biology. a name that has been applied previously to a different species or genus, and therefore cannot be used for a new species or genus, on the basis of the law of priority.
5. a person or thing having the same name as another; namesake.
